Britta Kinkeldei – Marketing & Administration
Britta joined the NGP Capital team in 2020, right after the start of the pandemic. With a background in remote work, she had no problem jumping right in and hit the ground running. Britta is Paul and Rohini's EA and she also supports our US marketing. When she's not busy scheduling or booking travel, she creates the social media posts you see on LinkedIn and Twitter, organizes internal events like lunches and Happy Hours, and handles all the logistics for our (virtual) CxO Network events. She can't wait to start planning some in-person events.
Outside of work, Britta is active on her kids' elementary school PTA, heads out on early morning runs and gets in a workout at the local Barre3 studio. Dig in to see what got her excited about tech and to read her thoughts on D&I.
Tell us a little bit about your background?
I got my undergraduate degree in broadcast journalism...but then I quickly realized I was not cut out to get up in the wee hours of the morning to anchor a news cast :) I spent a couple of years in Germany, reconnecting with all of my family there, and working for (the German version of MTV) VIVA and then for a smaller music magazine in Cologne. That job gave me a chance to travel around Europe to various music festivals. After attending grad school in Hamburg I headed back to the states and ended up in South Carolina, which is where I got my start as an EA. I worked at a small family office as the office coordinator, Executive Assistant, Personal Assistant and occasionally I dabbled in marketing too. I realized that my Type A personality thrives as an EA, so I stuck with it.
What first got you excited about the tech industry?
I still remember getting my first NES and then the Game Boy - I was fascinated. I think what really hooked me though was the first iPhone. It's amazing how far cell phones and gaming systems have come.
If you got $1B of funding for your own start-up, what kind of company would you start from scratch today?
I think I would invest the money to create affordable childcare solutions. I was born and spent a lot of time in Germany where childcare is basically free. When we moved to California I was shocked by the childcare costs.
What do you like to do in your free time that does not involve a screen?
I love to go on runs (sometimes with my dog Maya) or do yoga to decompress. But I also volunteer at my kids' elementary school and as much time as I can taking my kids to explore different playgrounds around the South Bay, Peninsula, and San Francisco.
Diversity and Inclusion is hot topic now. What improvements do you think the industry could make overall?
Diversity and Inclusion is such a broad topic. I think the first thing VC firms could do is work on inclusion. Survey your team to see if each and every member feels valued, heard, included? Then take a look at your hiring practices. Are they inclusive? Are you posting open positions publicly? Are you considering candidates from different backgrounds? Inclusion is definitely the lowest hanging fruit and it's the most important step in getting your team on board for any D&I practices you develop.
